Bothell, Washington (GEHA Standard Option): The rates quoted for a $350k Term Life Insurance policy are much cheaper than even the best one found on Select Quote. How can this be? I've been warned that it may be a teaser quote and the actual may be much higher since no health questions were asked to get the quote. True?
No, it's not a teaser rate.  The health questions simply determine if you will be accepted or declined coverage.  They do not impact or change the rate you have been quoted.  It's not uncommon for us to be extremely competitive on rates for our Term Life coverage.

Idaho Falls, Idaho I don’t understand the "elimination period" on Short-Term Income Protection. What is that, and how do I choose the right one for me?
Scott Horstman: The "elimination period" (EP) is the amount of time that you wait after you become disabled before your benefits start to accrue. So, if you have a 30-day EP, your benefits will begin accruing on the 31st day you are disabled. It’s like a deductible, but instead of being dollars, it’s measured in days.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania How does the accelerated benefit under the Term Life Insurance work?
Scott Horstman: If a covered Term Life Insurance member is diagnosed as terminally ill (meaning a life expectancy of 12 months or fewer), they may elect to immediately receive up to 80% of their coverage, to a maximum of $250,000, in lieu of the benefit going to their beneficiary at time of death.

Please see the Summary Plan Description (PDF) for full details.

Your coverage will end on the date you cease to be an Active Employee. Contrary to other plans, the GEHAtotal plan doesn't integrate, meaning benefits are completely separate from any other plans you have in place.

Seattle, Washington How does this compare to FEGLI life insurance coverage?
Scott Horstman:

Our Term Life Insurance product provides true double indemnity protection as the Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit (AD&D) matches the full life coverage amount. In contrast, FEGLI only provides AD&D protection in the base coverage (annual salary plus $2,000).

Additionally, we’ve included valuable benefits such as Repatriation, Rehabilitation, Adaptive Home and Vehicle and Therapeutic Counseling in our plan. Please see the Summary Plan Description (PDF) for full details.

Bethesda, Maryland What is the percentage of increase between the five year age bands?
GEHAtotal: This will vary by individual. However, as an example, consider a 35-year-old female who is a non-smoker with a bachelor’s degree earning $60,000 per year. Her initial premium for $200,000 of coverage is $10.20 per month. At age 40, her premium is $13.43. At age 45, her premium is $21.76.  At age 50, her premium is $31.79.  And at age 55, her premium is $47.43.
